How do states interact in an anarchic world? Since the middle of the twentieth century, ‘realism’ has emerged as the dominant interpretation, where states are regarded as fundamentally power-driven. ‘Realists’ model their understanding of international relations on the works of Thomas Hobbes, who has been advanced as the major international anarchist. But how accurate is this marriage of Hobbes and ‘realism’? In reconstructing Hobbes’ own view of the international domain, this talk argues for a divorce of Hobbes and ‘realism’.
