The Honors Program, Foggy Bottom, and the Mt. Vernon Campus

12 Sep

If you were at our welcome reception in the beginning of September, you heard Vice Provost Forrest Maltzman announce to students that there is ongoing discussion for a proposed dual campus model for the University Honors Program.

If you weren’t there, well,  now you know.  But what does it mean?  The discussions for this proposal are focused on a dual campus model.  That is to say, there are no proposals to move the UHP entirely to the Vern.  Instead, we’d have two offices.  Just like an ellipse has too foci, so too could the UHP.

But, the details of what exactly that will look like are still unclear, as the discussions are still ongoing.  That’s why we need students to come to the Town Hall event this week on Thursday, September 15th at 12:30pm in Marvin 302 to be a part of that discussion.

  • How much of a presence do we need to keep in Foggy Bottom?
  • How much should we have on the Vern?
  • How important is the Foggy Bottom office to you for studying during finals, or just as a place to hang out in between courses?
  • Should advising be primarily on the Vern, in Foggy Bottom, split evenly between the two, or some other combination?
  • What kind of events do you think we could hold at the Vern, and which are better suited for Foggy Bottom?

There’s only one way to make sure that a dual campus model can be successful, and that’s doing it right!  But to do it right, we need to know from you what you want and what you need.

We think this could be a great opportunity for the UHP to expand its presence across the University, provide more opportunities for students (and faculty!), and to keep making the UHP better and better.  To seize this opportunity, we need your help.  Please come to the UHP Town Hall event on September 15th at 12:30pm in Marvin 302.

The entire UHP staff, including Director Maria Frawley will be there.  Additionally, Vice Provost Forrest Maltzman will be there to speak with you as well.

If you have any concerns, questions, comments, or ideas about expanding the UHP offices to the Vern, it’s extremely important that you attend the Town Hall event this Thursday, September 15th at 12:30pm in Marvin 302. If you can’t make it, feel free to leave your comments on this post and they will be read and responded to.
