Web Design Internship with FUEL Youth [Intern]

About Us: FUEL Youth is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting community-driven education initiatives in Liberia. We are a small, all-volunteer team, and we’re looking for bright, hard-working interns to help advance our mission.

Position Description: FUEL Youth offers an opportunity for a programming/graphic design student or young professional to gain experience with (a) redesigning and improving usability on a website, (b) improving web graphics and multimedia on website, and (c) designing promotional materials.  The web design intern will improve his or her skills in website and graphic design, while learning about the inner workings of a grassroots international nonprofit organization.  The intern will be supervised by the President and the Vice President.

Skills and Education Preferred:

  • Young professional, grad student, university grad or current student focusing on computer programming, web design, or equivalent.
  • Background knowledge or coursework with respect to web design, nonprofits, Africa, or international development (preferred).
  • Excellent computer skills including usage of the Microsoft Office suite (required), HTML and CSS programming skills (required), and graphics programs (including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Joomla, and VistaPrint).  Proficiency in, or ability and willingness to learn, these programs or applications is preferred.

Expected Projects and Skills Learned:

Website & On-line Tool Management– Redesigning and managing FUEL Youth’s website and on-line tools, including uploading/improving content, fixing glitches, and HTML and CSS programming.

Promotional Material Design: Assist in design of FUEL Youth’s promotional materials – including brochures, presentations, email templates, and invitations for printing with VistaPrint.

Web Graphics Design: Improve the look and functionality of web graphics and multimedia.

Web Content: Propose and execute strategies for better presentation and expansion of website content, with a focus on interactivity and social media.

Expectations of Intern:

  • Working hours are flexible and can be shifted to different weeks if exams or papers are due.
  • Estimated time requirements: 5-10 hours per week, depending on which tasks are undertaken.
  • Intern is expected to have independent access to a computer and workspace.
  • Intern is expected to make brief written reports to his or her supervisor every two weeks of the internship.
  • Internship may be conducted remotely from the intern’s location, although preference will be given to interns available in Washington, D.C. No housing, transportation or communication expenses will be reimbursed.
  • Internship is unpaid. Academic credit can be arranged.
