Public Policy Intern

Reports:       Public Policy Director
Location:
This position is based in GLSEN’s Washington, D.C. office
Objectives:
The Public Policy Intern will assist Policy Associates and Directors in both state and federal work, ranging from legislation, legal cases, and organizational outreach.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with lobbying efforts for the Safe Schools Improvement Act and other federal legislation efforts
  • Develop and forge relationships with key organizations, offices, and members
  • Monitor state-level legislation via Statescape or other legislative tracking tools.
  • Create and maintain of resources for state partners and local activists.
  • Develop, publish and monitor state and local action alerts.
  • Support and research certain federal policy projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Strong research skills
  • General knowledge of the legislative process
  • Experience with the Internet and Microsoft Word (Excel, Powerpoint, and Office recommended)
  • Background or strong interest in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, civil rights and/or education issues
  • Demonstrated experience with or commitment to work in diverse communities
  • Willingness to travel as required

Schedule:

  • Full-time and part-time internships are available.
  • A commitment of 8 weeks is required.
  • Internships may take place during the school semester or the summer.
  • We will interview and select interns on a rolling basis.

Stipends: Stipends are available for interns.
Location:
Our office is based in downtown Washington DC, convenient to the Blue/Orange and Red line Metro trains.
